âRight arm looks good,â Oz slapped Jimâs punching arm. âKinda limb you find on a tennis pro or a chronic masturbator and last time I checked, no tennis court in the Abbey.â
âBrother Petitâs been teaching me punching.â
Sebastian produced two glasses of milk that was, to Ozâs tremendous dismay, pasteurized.
âHeard you givinâ it to Whip pretty good down there. Iâm on board obviously but doesnât seem much like you.â
âIâm getting headaches like crazy. Mood swings too. I think Iâm dying ââ
Oz waved Jim off, uninterested, and drained his glass, the resulting milk mustache invisible in his white beard. âIâm not here to micromanage. Youâre feeling it though, arenât you?â
âI told you, Iâm getting headachesââ
âNot that. Your relation to other people. Bolstered, ainât it?â
Oz would only ever talk about what Oz wanted to talk about, so Jim begrudgingly obliged. âWhen we were in the boat, a few days before we got picked up, I felt a strong connection to Barney that came out of nowhere.â
âNo mystery there. Youâre just a goddamned homo.â Oz guffawed at his own joke.
Jim smiled politely. As was the case with many people, heâd always found the effort Oz employed to try and be funny was inversely related to how funny he was at any given moment. Humor was a cow on the railroad tracks or a catheter tube two sizes too big: trying to force it didnât do anyone any favors.
âOkay, okay. Just relax, master of comedy. Youâve uncovered one of the great gifts in this life: to serve of oneâs own accord. Meaning youâve chosen to give your whole life to those around you. Now, I know what youâre thinking: whatâs with the commie balderdash? But we Operators are truly in a position to help.â
âItâd be great if you didnât call me a homo again, but I really did, um . . . love Barney. And he wasnât like he is now. The guy was damn near impossible to like.â
âTo play this game is to live with emotion turned all the way up. Youâre gonna love like youâve never loved before, but that territory comes with a mountain range of hurt. Impossible to avoid Iâm afraid.â
Sebastian chucked a drunk out the front door and Hawk fluttered in above his head.
âRideâs here.â Oz helped himself to the rest of Jimâs milk and waved to Hawk. âJust wanted to say a quick hi and give ya something.â Oz put his hands on Jimâs shoulders and spoke directly at him. âI know youâre feeling off. Engage with your buddies, I know Barneyâs always game. Do what youâre good at, do what you want to be good at, and keep an eye out for that crafty bitch, Bo Peep. Hawkâs gettinâ antsy, Iâll see ya.â Oz started to shove his way through the Bar Mars crowd.
âWhat do you have for me?â Jim shouted.
âOh!â Oz returned and pulled Jim into a solid hug. âA good hug can change everything. Keep up the good work, Jim. Youâre doinâ me proud.â
Hawk landed on Ozâs shoulder and they left.
